MEET SOPHIA

Sophia Calabrese, Mental Health Counseling Intern

Specialties: Play therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Works With: Adolescents and Young Adults

As a Mental Health Counseling intern in my final year at Fordham University, I am committed to creating a safe, welcoming, and non-judgmental environment for all clients. My approach is grounded in compassion, empathy, mutual respect, and authenticity, as I strive to meet each client where they are.

I primarily work with adolescents and young adults, but I am open to working with children using play therapy models. I am particularly interested in supporting individuals who experience anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), eating disorders, and trauma-related concerns.

My current therapeutic approach draws from Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), humanistic, and client-centered approaches, aiming to tailor each session to each client’s individual needs, strengths, and goals. As I believe no single therapeutic approach is a “perfect fit” for every individual, I intend to also draw from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and trauma-informed care interventions as I continue my therapeutic journey.

As I am an intern, it is important to note that much of my current clinical experience has been through graduate coursework, skills practice, and mock counseling sessions. However, I want potential clients to know that I intend to enhance my therapeutic knowledge and skills through this process to ensure I can empower all clients to navigate their experiences with insight, confidence, and autonomy, providing a space to slow down, feel understood, or work towards meaningful change.
